BAGHDAD, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- One of Iraq's most prominent reporters has reportedly died after being shot by unknown gunmen in Baghdad last weekend.
Colleagues of Shihab al-Tamimi told CNN that the head of the Iraqi Journalist Union suffered a fatal heart attack while recovering from bullet wounds.
Al-Tamimi was shot on a street near the union's offices. CNN said the Iraqi government had ordered that he be taken out of Iraq for treatment but died before he could be moved.
The BBC said al-Tamimi was a "fierce critic of Iraq's sectarian violence" whose work appeared in several Iraqi newspapers.
