WASHINGTON, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Dozens of people who became ill after responding to 9/11 attacks rallied in Washington to urge U.S. President George Bush to restore their healthcare funding.
"They dug this country out of a hole and now it's time for this country to dig them out of their holes," said Joseph Zadroga, whose son James died from lung disease after spending 100 hours working at Ground Zero.
Tuesday's protests came after Bush's 2009 budget allocated $25 million for 9/11 worker's healthcare programs, which is significantly less than $108 million in 2008, the Daily News, a New York newspaper, reported.
U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., is reportedly sponsoring a bill named after Zadroga's son that would increase funding for the healthcare of 9/11 workers. Ill workers have reportedly held private meetings with Congress members to convince them to approve the Zadroga bill, the Daily News said.
