WASHINGTON, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. John Warner was being monitored in a Virginia hospital for a second day Tuesday for a previously diagnosed heart condition, his staff said.

The 81-year-old Virginia Republican was treated last fall for atrial fibrillation and was admitted Monday after consulting with a physician at the Capitol, The Washington Post reported.

"Senator Warner recently experienced a return of atrial fibrillation, and in consultation with the Capitol Physician's Office and his private doctors, is pursuing a re-evaluation of medications, which require regular monitoring and observation within a hospital environment," his office said in a statement reported by The Hill.

Atrial fibrillation occurs when the heart's atria, the two small upper chambers, "quiver" instead of beating normally, The Hill said.
