ROME, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Two polls released Tuesday give Silvio Berlusconi a good chance of winning another term as Italian prime minister.
The Euromedia Agency found that 44 percent to 46 percent of those surveyed favored the People of Liberty Party, Berlusconi's new political formation, ANSA reported. The coalition headed by Walter Veltroni would get 36 percent to 38 percent, the Italian news agency said.
The People of Liberty or PDL is an alliance of Berlusconi's Northern League and a Sicilian group. Veltroni has the support of the Democratic Party, his base, and the Italy of Values, a party headed by a former anti-corruption prosecutor.
Crespi Ricerche's numbers were very close to Euromedia's, with Berlusconi getting 44.3 percent and Veltroni at 35.5 percent.
The election is still six weeks away, and some surveys have suggested the gap between the two groupings is narrowing.
Berlusconi served as premier from April 1994 to January 1995 and again from 2001 to 2006. He was narrowly defeated by a center-left coalition headed by Romano Prodi, who resigned after losing a recent vote of confidence.
