COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Skirmishes between Sri Lankan solders and Tamil Tigers in the Mannar and Vavuniya districts killed 26 rebels and five soldiers, military officials said Monday.

Military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said government troops initiated raids against rebel bunkers Sunday, destroying several along the front lines in the two areas, Colombo Page reported Monday.

Three soldiers were killed and 11 injured during a battle Sunday in the Parappakandal area of Mannar when government troops destroyed six Tamil Tiger bunkers and killed three rebels, the spokesman said. Another engagement in the same area left six Tamil Tigers -- officially known as Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam -- and a soldier dead.
