India mob attack leads to arrests

PATNA, India, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Police in the Indian state of Bihar have arrested seven people accused of taking part in a recent mob attack against an injured homicide suspect.

The suspect was forcibly taken by a mob of people from a hospital outside the city of Patna last week and repeatedly beaten until he lost consciousness, the BBC said Sunday.

Indian TV networks broadcast videotaped footage of the incident which showed the bound man being dragged and kicked by the angry crowd.

At least one police officer is reportedly visible in the featured videos simply standing by as the mob exacts its revenge on the helpless homicide suspect, the BBC said.

The mob's victim was reported in serious condition at a hospital, while four police officers have been suspended.

The British broadcaster said the incident marked the most recent attempt by members of the public to enact their own form of justice. A robbery suspect was lynched by an angry mob in Bihar last year and was reportedly aided in the vigilante effort by several police officers.
