EVANSTON, Ill., Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Pressure is mounting on the dean of Northwestern University's journalism school in suburban Chicago to authenticate quotes he used in a magazine article.

Sixteen instructors have signed a statement calling on Medill School of Journalism Dean John Lavine to prove he didn't fabricate anonymous quotes that appeared in two introductory letters he wrote for Medill's alumni magazine, The Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday.

The two-page statement, signed by tenured faculty as well as contract lecturers, says the matter has turned into a crisis since first being reported by a columnist for the student newspaper, The Daily Northwestern.

The Northwestern columnist wrote that all 29 students in the marketing class Lavine highlighted denied providing the anonymous quotes he used in his magazine article.

NU spokesman Al Cubbage says Northwestern's office of the provost is reviewing Lavine's use of unnamed sources and "the veracity of the quotations."
