SANTA FE, N.M., Feb. 19 (UPI) -- The Democratic Party chairman for New Mexico said Monday he plans to look into complaints from voters who said their names weren't on voting lists.
About 17,000 voters had to cast a provisional ballot in the Feb. 5 caucus, sometimes on scraps of blank paper, because of the oversight, The New Mexican (Santa Fe) said Tuesday.
The vote count was delayed nine days and Democratic Party officials announced just last week that Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., beat out her rival Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., by about 1,700 votes.
Party officials cited an incomplete list of Democratic voters, but said an unusually high voter turnout also contributed to the general problem.
State Democratic Party Chairman Brian Colon said Monday the underlying cause of the voter-list problem has yet to be determined, but he noted "any complaint is worth investigating."
