Girl, 8, rescued after falling into well

CAYUGA, Ontario, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- An 8-year-old Canadian girl from the Niagara peninsula was recovering Tuesday after falling 60 feet into an icy well, Toronto media reported.

Victoria Spidel and her 12-year-old sister were playing Monday outside their rural home near Cayuga midday when she hopped on the well's concrete cap, the Toronto Sun reported. The concrete crumbled and the child dropped into the water and grabbed onto a pipe, Ontario Provincial Police Constrable Paula Wright said.

The girl broke her arm in the fall and was partially submerged for almost an hour as fire and paramedic crews talked to her and rigged a rescue, the report said.

"The fire department did an amazing rescue. They lowered a firefighter in a wet suit down the well using a ladder as a counter lever," said Wright. "The firefighter was able to grab her and both police and fire pulled them to ground level."

The girl was taken to a hospital for treatment of her fracture and mild hypothermia, the report said.
