Rice: Kenyan issues not 'unbridgeable'

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Monday she found potential points of agreement between the two sides to resolve the Kenyan crisis.

"I don't think there are unbridgeable differences" between Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga during a news conference while returning to the United States.

Rice went to Nairobi, Kenya, to lend help to resolving the violence that erupted after Kibaki was re-elected over Odinga in December. Talks mediated by former U.N. Secretary-General Kofki Annan have been under way for more than three weeks.

When she briefs U.S. President George Bush, "I'm going to tell him that this is not unbridgeable and that we ought to keep engaged and we should stay actively involved," Rice said.

In separate talks with Kibaki and Odinga, Rice said: "I was clear that it was important that they find a way to move on. My goal here was to send a message of concern."

She said she believes both sides want resolution.

"Each of them said I think there is a solution here," she said. "I'm not sure they found it yet but I also come away really believing this is not unbridgeable."
