Psych exam ordered for slaying suspect

NEW YORK, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- A psychiatric evaluation has been ordered for the man charged in the slaying of New York therapist Kathryn Faughey and the injury of psychiatrist Kent Shinbach.

David Tarloff, 39, was being held at Bellevue Hospital Center Monday following a five-minute hearing Sunday before Acting Supreme Court Justice Ruth Pinkholz, The New York Times reported.

Tarloff has told investigators he did not intend to attack Faughey last Tuesday but instead was planning to rob Shinbach and then leave the country or go to Hawaii with his ailing mother.

Officials have confirmed Shinbach had played a role in committing Tarloff to a mental health institution 17 years ago but Shinbach said he had no recollection of encountering Tarloff before Tuesday night.

A law enforcement official told The Times Tarloff had become so obsessed with his institutionalized mother in recent months that his father, Leonard, was forced to move her from nursing home to nursing home.
