DENVER, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- A counterfeit $100 bill left Westminster, Colo., Girl Scout Troop 2121 with a hard day of work selling cookies and no profit to show for it.
A conniving couple took advantage of the girls at the end of the first day of the annual Girl Scouts cookie sale for Denver-area troops, The Denver Post reported Sunday.
"Towards the end of our sale (Friday) night, a young couple came and purchased two boxes of cookies and left with $93.50 in change," said Jil Hennessey-Seabolt, the cookie director for Junior Girl Scouts Troop 2121. "They had two boxes of our cookies and a whole bunch of free, really good, spendable money."
The fraud wiped the troops profit for the day, which not only helps the troop but is also distributed to local charities.
"Something like this isn't fair when it happens to adults, but when it happens to kids who work so hard, it's so frustrating," Hennessey-Seabolt said.
