Report: Obama votes understated in primary

NEW YORK, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Officials in New York City say discrepancies in the results of the Democratic primary election understated the vote for presidential hopeful Barack Obama.

City election officials have confirmed discrepancies between vote totals reported on primary night and the actual tally recorded on hundreds of voting machines in the city, The New York Times reported Saturday.

For example, Obama initially was reported as receiving no votes in the heavily black 94th Election District in Harlem's 70th Assembly District, the Times reported, noting a recount now shows Obama with 136 votes and rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton with 261 votes.

Nearly 80 districts in the city showed Obama with no votes, said city election officials who estimate it will take weeks to finish a formal review of the voting.

Obama and Clinton's campaign agree that mistakes, rather than corruption, likely caused tired vote inspectors to get some results wrong, the Times reported, noting even an additional couple of hundred votes in New York might help Obama gain a few more delegates to the nominating convention in Denver this summer.
