Lewis, a superdelegate for this summer's Democratic National Convention, had been reported to be favoring U.S. Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois as the Democratic presidential nominee over Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., The New York Times reported Friday. He had been one of Clinton's most prominent black supporters.
Lewis later was reported to have denied reports he was switching allegiances, CNN and The Washington Post (NYSE:WPO) reported.
The Clinton campaign reported having no word from Lewis about the about-face, the Post reported. Brenda Jones, a spokeswoman for Lewis, said the Times story and other published reports about the congressman making such a switch were inaccurate.
Jones said Lewis has left open the option of changing his superdelegate support for Clinton, but hasn't made a decision. She told the Post the congressman's comments about the enthusiasm he has seen for Obama "are observations," not statements of preference.
