UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- The Russian ambassador to the United Nations warned the U.N. Security Council of possible violence if Kosovo declares independence unilaterally.
Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told the Security Council session on Kosovo the number of Serbian refugees from Kosovo may sharply increase if the province breaks with Serbia, Russian news agency ITAR-TASS reported Friday.
"There is a real threat of resumed inter-ethnic violence and mounted extremist activities in Kosovo and in the Balkans as a whole," Churkin said, adding that the matter was an international problem needing to be resolved by the Security Council.
Kosovo is expected to declare independence from Serbia within days. Serbia said it opposes the unilateral move but pledged not to retaliate. The European Union was to send a mission of police and justice personnel to Kosovo and NATO troops will provide security.
The Russian delegate said the United States and the European Union "have no lawful or moral right to push Kosovo to unilateral independence."
