CHICAGO, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- The Tribune Co., owner of the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and seven other newspapers, has announced plans to eliminate 400 to 500 jobs.
At the Los Angeles Times, the total is 100 to 150 with up to 50 of them from the newsroom staff, the newspaper reported. Publisher David Hiller said the company would use attrition and voluntary buyouts before returning to layoffs as a last resort.
New York Times Editor Bill Keller told employees at a regular weekly meeting that 100 newsroom jobs are to be eliminated there, Conde Nast Portfolio reported. That is about 7 percent of the newsroom staff.
Catherine Mathis, a spokeswoman for the Times, said the newspaper is in the midst of "a very difficult time in the business." She said the number of people working in the newsroom is at a historical high.
The Tribune Co.'s other newspapers include the Orlando Sentinel, Hartford Courant, Baltimore Sun and Newsday in the Long Island suburbs of New York.
