OTTAWA, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- The former head of Canada's nuclear regulatory agency, fired last month, is suing the government for wrongful dismissal, media in Ottawa reported Friday.

Linda Keen, former chief of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, claims in her lawsuit Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn's decision to fire her in a late-night phone call was "invalid or unlawful," the Globe and Mail reported.

Keen had refused to endorse the Conservative government's call to reopen a nuclear reactor in Chalk River, Ontario, as she said the aging facility needed massive overhauls to be safe. The facility produces the majority of medical isotopes used in cancer treatment in North America.

Against her advice, the government ordered the facility back online with the backing of Health Minister Tony Clement and Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

During parliamentary debate on the issue, Harper called Keen a "Liberal partisan," which she denied several times to the media, the report said.
