Defendant says he thought chemical safe

MILWAUKEE , Feb. 14 (UPI) -- A man accused of daring a woman to drink a caustic industrial cleanser testified in Milwaukee that he did not expect the solution to harm her.

Sean Kobin, who could face 25 years in prison if convicted on a charge of first-degree reckless injury, testified that he had earlier sampled a small portion of sodium hydroxide at his workplace without consequence before he gave the substance to Chrystal Kolinski, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported Thursday.

Kobin testified that Kolinski's ingestion of the substance, which caused her to become violently ill and require rigorous medical attention, was her own idea. He said she offered to drink a solution containing the caustic chemical on a $20 bet.

However, Milwaukee police Detective David Salazar testified Wednesday that Kobin told him during questioning that he is a sadist with an oral fixation. Kobin became a registered sex offender after a 2004 case involving a 13-year-old girl that he convinced to drink bleach, lighter fluid and urine. He is currently facing charges in two other Wisconsin counties for similar reported offenses.
