Injuries caused in streetcar collision

NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Two streetcars collided head-on Monday in New Orleans, injuring 23 people, said Regional Transit Authority spokeswoman Rosalind Cook.

Cook said the injured were taken to area hospitals where most were treated for cuts bruises and back injuries and released, The Times-Picayune newspaper in New Orleans reported.

The accident occurred near the RTA facility when the two streetcars ended up on the same track.

One of the streetcar operators suffered neck injuries, while the other was cut in the head, said the spokeswoman.

Cook characterized this type of accident as very rare and still under investigation.
