HAVANA, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Cuban security officials have detained a university student seen on a widely played Internet video asking pointed questions of a top Cuban lawmaker.
Eliecer Avila, who in the video is seen questioning National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcon, was arrested during the weekend, The Miami Herald reported Monday.
Avila was one of a handful of students who quizzed Alcaron about the communist island's repressive laws and her effort has attracted a wide audience on the Internet.
''I've never seen anything like that before,'' said Phil Peters, a Cuba expert with the Lexington Institute, an Arlington, Va., think-tank, the Herald reported last week.
In the video, a student questioned the "possible merits" of candidates in the recent elections. All the candidates in the January elections were from the ruling communist party.
Traditionally, Cuban authorities retain tight control of the media on the island and disallow most criticism of communism.
