SEOUL, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- South Korea is disputing a Newsweek report that it paid a $4 million ransom to the kidnappers of 21 missionaries abducted in Afghanistan.

Taliban officials are quoted in Newsweek's Feb. 6 issue saying the ransom that freed the South Korean Christian aid workers in August was paid by the South Korean government.

"If we were going to free them without any payment, (the hostage taking) would not have been worth it," a Taliban official told the Pakistani publication Afaqi, Newsweek said.

South Korean officials have denied paying any money to the kidnappers, the Yonhap news agency reported Sunday.

Government officials say the hostages were released on promises to bring home South Korean troops and end Christian missionary work in Afghanistan, Yonhap said.
