NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 10 (UPI) -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in Norfolk, Va., called out Fox Sunday for not allowing two of its ads to run during the Super Bowl.
The network turned down the $4.2 million PETA offered to broadcast two commercials targeting Kentucky Fried Chicken, The (Norfolk) Virginian Pilot reported.
The spots were to air during Super Bowl XLII, which had its biggest audience ever with nearly 100 million viewers.
The PETA ads, titled "Kentucky Fried Cruelty," accuse KFC of torturing chickens.
Fox cited a network policy of not airing "viewpoint or issue-advocacy" ads.
PETA sent a letter to Fox officials accusing the network of "misrepresenting its policy" for accepting other types of ads.
"It's ridiculous that the network has no objection to ads that advocate killing animals and eating them," said PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. "But it won't give a paid ad with a humane message equal time."
