EDINBURGH, Scotland, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- A monkey escaped Saturday from a rabies quarantine cage at a Scottish zoo and was shot dead when efforts to capture or stun it failed.
Iain Valentine, head of animals at the Edinburgh Zoo, told The Scotsman that keepers feared the tailless Barbary macaque would get away under cover of darkness. They had been pursuing it and had come close to the animal, but it eluded efforts to recapture it or to shoot it with a tranquilizing dart.
"Having to shoot one of the animals in our care is a regrettable situation but the welfare of the public has to be our primary concern," he said.
The zoo has not had an escape alert since 2006 when teenagers vandalized the locks in a tiger enclosure. The tigers did not get loose.
Britain has strict laws on animal quarantine to avoid rabies in the country.
