PORTSMOUTH, Ohio, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Police in Portsmouth, Ohio, said the suspect in two stabbing incidents died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after a four-hour standoff.
One of the stabbing victims, a teacher and wife of the suspect, was listed in critical condition at a hospital in Huntington, W.Va., about 40 miles from Portsmouth, Huntington television station WSAZ-TV reported. Police said she was shot and stabbed on the front steps of her elementary school in front of students.
A second victim from another incident is in a Columbus, Ohio, hospital in critical condition. Police said they believe the two stabbings were related.
SWAT teams and law enforcement personnel from other agencies were called when the suspect, Michael Layne, barricaded himself in a house after the two incidents, a police spokesman said.
Police said the incident at the school stemmed from a domestic dispute.
One of the victims had a restraining order issued against Layne, officials said.
A school representative said the facility was locked down for about two hours.
