ASUNCION, Paraguay, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Paraguayan health officials have reported the first case of yellow fever in more than 30 years, ABC Color newspaper reported Wednesday.

A man suffering from the mosquito-borne disease was being treated, while numerous residents of San Pedro province, where the sickness was first detected, were being vaccinated.

Last month, Paraguay issued a nationwide health alert in hopes of stopping an outbreak of dengue fever in the South American country.

According to health officials, at least 150 suspected cases of the mosquito-born illness were detected in Paraguay since the start of the year.

Last year, 17 Paraguayans died of dengue fever, prompting some to blame President Nicanor Duarte for not issuing nationwide warnings about the disease.
