LONDON, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Muslim groups have criticized the British government for banning a controversial Muslim cleric from entering the country, a published report said.

Britain also branded Yusuf al-Qaradawi an extremist.

The Guardian confirmed that Qaradawi had applied for entry but was refused. Conservative leader David Cameron called for his exclusion, calling the cleric a "dangerous and divisive" preacher of hate.

Qaradawi, who also is banned from entering the United States, visited the United Kingdom in 2004 at the invitation of London Mayor Ken Livingstone, sparking protests from Jewish groups and gays, who regard him as anti-Semitic and homophobic.
