JERUSALEM, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- The Israeli government Wednesday said it approved a proposal to begin constructing a barrier along the Israeli border with Egypt.

The proposal came amid conversations among Israeli officials discussing the breach of the border between Egypt and Gaza Jan. 23.

Officials said the breach raised security concerns in the Israeli military over the possibility of militants entering Israeli territory, Haaretz said Wednesday.

Officials also entertained the possibility of a mounting a major ground operation to take control over Gaza and petition for an international peacekeeping force.

Defense officials said it would seek the establishment a multinational force in Gaza modeled after the U.N. force in Lebanon as part of a broader final-status agreement toward an independent Palestinian state.
