BISMARK, N.D., Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Barack Obama easily won Tuesday's Democratic caucus in North Dakota while Mitt Romney captured the Republican race.

The Bismark (N.D.) Tribune said Obama picked up 61 percent of the vote to Hillary Clinton's 37 percent. The party will parcel out the state's 11 delegates on a proportional basis.

The Republican vote was closer with Romney leading in the home stretch of the winner-take-all race with 36 percent of the vote. John McCain was in second with 23 percent of the vote. Ron Paul captured 21 percent and Mike Huckabee 19 percent. Twenty-six delegates were at stake.

Paul, whose maverick Internet outreach built a small but determined cadre of supporters nationwide, made a rare personal appearance in Fargo Tuesday. The Tribune said Paul told about 300 fans at the city's Elks lodge that winning North Dakota would "send a strong message" to the nation despite the state's small population.
