AUGUSTA, Maine, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won the non-binding Maine Republican presidential caucuses Saturday, state Republican Party officials said.

With more than two-thirds of the caucuses reporting, Romney had more than half the vote -- 2,365 votes out of 4,558 -- officials told the Portland Press-Herald.

Arizona Sen. John McCain trailed with 959 votes, or 21 percent, followed by Texas Rep. Ron Paul with 857 votes, or 19 percent, and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with 271 votes, or 6 percent.

The caucuses choose delegates to the state convention in May. Additional Republican caucuses are scheduled for Sunday and later this month. Democratic caucuses will be held Feb. 10.

Turnout was higher than expected, the Kennebec Journal reported.

Another former Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift showed up in Maine Saturday to tout McCain as a "true American hero," the Journal said.

Romney was represented by his son, Tagg, while Huckabee and Paul also had surrogates on hand.
