Student is charged with killing her baby

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Jan. 30 (UPI) -- A Louisville, Ky. college student was accused of murder after she allegedly hid her baby in a trash can, thinking it was dead upon delivery in a dorm bathroom.

Kathryn McCoy, an athlete at Bellarmine University, denied charges of murder and tampering with physical evidence in the Oct. 23 incident when she allegedly hid her infant's body after delivering it into a dorm toilet, the Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal reported Wednesday.

"I just couldn't bring myself to tell my parents," she told police, the report said.

The newborn girl was at full term when she was delivered alive, a Jefferson County autopsy found.

"There is no proof that indicates she killed this child. Nothing to indicate she drowned the child. Nobody said they heard a child cry," defense attorney Brian Butler told the newspaper.

McCoy reportedly told police she felt the baby moving in the days preceding its birth but that it had no heart beat and was blue in color when she delivered it.
