Stalled front soaks Nova Scotia

OTTAWA, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Canada's Maritimes were socked Monday with snow and rain that closed schools and virtually grounded air travel.

Environment Canada advised folks in Nova Scotia to be ready for up to 15 centimeters (5.9 inches) of snow expected to accumulate by Tuesday night, except for coastal areas where the precipitation would largely be in the form of cold, heavy rains.

A wet low-pressure system remained virtually stalled south of Nova Scotia on Monday, but was expected to start creeping to the north overnight.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said Monday that the situation was forcing numerous flight cancellations and delays out of Stanfield International Airport in Halifax.

To the west, British Columbia was bracing for the arrival of another Pacific storm expected to bring heavy snow to the Vancouver area and Queen Charlotte Mountains. The snow will switch to rain through Friday.
