TORONTO, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- A former pathologist appeared before a Toronto inquiry into supposed mistakes he made in cases involving the death of a child.

Charles Smith took the stand Monday after telling reporters he was there to "take full responsibility for my work."

Smith has been the subject of a judicial inquiry that began last fall and focused on alleged errors made in 20-45 cases in which he was involved. The Toronto Globe and Mail said many of the cases resulted in charges and even convictions of innocent individuals.

The situation created a scandal in Canada, although Smith's lawyer insisted his client was not out to railroad or falsely accuse anyone.

Some of the suspects who were exonerated told the newspaper they hoped the inquiry would not result in Smith being let off with a slap on the wrist.
