HARTFORD, Conn., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- A poll shows neither race nor gender dominate the race between Democratic presidential contenders Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in Connecticut.
The Hartford Courant/Center for Survey Research and Analysis poll released Sunday found state Democrats split about evenly over whether electing the first woman or the first African-American would be the most "historic" event.
"Democratic women are alone among the parties and genders in thinking
electing a woman would be more historic," said Monika McDermott,
research director for the polling center. "Men in the Democratic Party, and Republicans overall, just don't have a strong preference on who gets elected first. The symbolism doesn't mean much to them."
The Courant said 52 percent of Democratic women in Connecticut favored Clinton compared to 21 percent for Obama. Male Democrats, however, gave Clinton 33 percent of their vote compared to 31 percent for Obama.
The poll was conducted Jan. 9-17.
