WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- The Alfalfa Club, an exclusive group of about 200 rich and influential people, is to be headed by U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn.
The group's annual black-tie dinner Saturday drew former secretary of state Colin Powell, Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., and Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty, The Washington Post reported Sunday.
President George W. Bush delivered remarks to the club one last time as commander in chief.
"It was a moving evening with the president saying farewell," said Landon Parvin, a longtime Alfalfan.
The Alfalfa Club was founded in 1913 by four Southern gentlemen, apparently for no purpose other than holding an annual dinner on the last Saturday of January in historical reverence of the Jan. 19 birthday of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, the newspaper reported.
Reporters aren't allowed to attend, and Hillary Clinton broke the gender barrier in 1994 when the then-first lady attended with husband President Bill Clinton.
