PHOENIX, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- A Phoenix City Council member says a proposed ban on the obscure rodeo event of "horse tripping" is getting plenty of public support.

Councilwoman Thelda Williams, who is spearheading the measure, told The Arizona Republic the proposal was endorsed by animal-rights groups and was being supported by her colleagues.

Horse tripping is exempt from Arizona animal-cruelty because it is classified as a rodeo event. The Republic said it is generally found only at small Mexican-style rodeos.

The event involves lassoing a galloping horse's front legs, causing the animal to crash headfirst into the ground. Larger Mexican and American-style rodeos don't include it on their schedule of events.

Williams' ban went before a council subcommittee last week and will likely undergo additional hearings before being put up for a vote by the full council.
