ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Security officials said a medium-security prison in Canada remained in lockdown Sunday in the wake of blazes set by prisoners protesting rights issues.
The 170 prisoners at the Matsqui facility in Abbotsford, British Columbia, were being kept in their cells following a protest that erupted Friday when inmates refused to return to their living units, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said.
Prison officials said negotiation and security teams deployed at the facility returned the prisoners to their cells by Saturday morning.
A prison spokesman said the inmates protested limitations on access to recreation areas and an alleged invasion of privacy when a guard suspected a woman of using her baby to smuggle drugs into the prison.
