SEOUL, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- A North Korean newspaper, in a commentary Saturday, called for an official end to the Korean War and improved relations with the United States.
The commentary in the North Korean Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, demanded that U.S. officials end their hard-line stance against North Korea and support a peace treaty officially ending the international conflict, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported.
"In order to ease military tension and secure a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula, the (United States) should move toward a peace treaty at an earlier date," the commentary read.
While the Korean War technically ended in 1953 through a truce between South and North Korea, no official peace treaty was ever signed.
A potential peace treaty has been discussed during the past year with some involved parties hoping it could calm negotiations involving the Koreas.
The news agency said a potential peace summit could include the United States and possibly China.
