KABUL, Afghanistan, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai has dismissed allegations Iran is aiding the Taliban, saying his country's neighbor is an ally.
Karzai said that while contentions Iran has links to the militant Islamic group, the Middle Eastern country's ties to Afghanistan have increased dramatically in the last six years, Iran's state-run PRESS TV reported Saturday.
"We have opened our doors to them. They have been helping us in Afghanistan," Karzai said of Iranian officials.
U.S. officials have been behind most of the allegations regarding Iran's connections to the Taliban, a situation Karzai hopes will not affect Afghan-Iranian relations.
The Afghan president said that while his country has relations with the United States, he hopes Iranian officials would not let that international relationship impact ties between their two countries.
PRESS TV reported Iranian officials also have dismissed the U.S. accusations, saying they support their neighboring countries' security efforts.
