Helicopter crash caused by low flying

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Los Angeles police said a helicopter pilot was flying too close to the ground before he crashed and died Friday night.

The man was flying solo to Torrance Municipal Airport when he flew into power lines right before the crash, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

Authorities were unable to identify the man because of severe burn trauma to his body, the report said.

The aircraft landed on the freeway and caused miles of traffic backups. Authorities said no motorists were injured in the accident.

The pilot was not in communication with air traffic officials before the 11 p.m. crash, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.
