Freezing weather halts trains in China

BEIJING, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Authorities say freezing weather stranded tens of thousands of Chinese rail passengers, and closed airports and highways.

Prolonged freezing rain, ice and snow damaged the power supply system in Hunan Province, halting 136 electric passenger trains Friday, reported Xinhua, China's official news agency.

Thousands of passengers stranded on the trains were being aided by more than 100 diesel locomotives summoned to pull the electric trains to their destinations, Xinhua reported.

More than 10,000 utility workers were dispatched to repair power lines linking railways in Beijing and Guangzhou in south China.

Weather-related transportation delays also were reported in Kunming, Yunnan Province, and Shenzhen in Guangdong Province.
