NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Former United Nations head Kofi Annan Saturday flew to remote parts of Kenya to witness the misery caused in the country's post-election violence.

Annan, the former U.N. secretary general, flew to the Rift Valley, where police Saturday brought 16 burned bodies to a mortuary and local hospital staff said they had received the bodies of nine more people killed by machetes and arrows, the BBC reported.

The violence, which began after last month's disputed presidential election, continued despite Annan's mediation last week between President Mwai Kibaki and Opposition Leader Raila Odinga.

Tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed in the Eldoret and Rift Valley region, where Annan pleaded with religious leaders to use their churches and mosques to promote peace, the BBC reported.
