FARMERS BRANCH, Texas, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- A Texas town's ordinance aimed at stemming illegal immigration requires residents to pay a fee and prove citizenship before renting homes.

Farmers Branch passed an ordinance Tuesday, mandating renters to pay $5 and claim U.S. citizenship or legal immigration status to receive an occupancy license from the city, The Dallas Morning News said.

"We've got to put a sword in the sand sometime, and I think this is it," resident Dale Cotton said at a city council meeting on the ordinance, the newspaper said.
