Nevada campus on edge over assaults

RENO, Nev., Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Students living on campus at the University of Nevada, Reno, reportedly are tense in the wake of several unsolved assaults and a kidnapping.

Most recently, Brianna Denison, a 19-year-old Santa Barbara, Calif., college student was abducted Sunday while visiting friends, the Reno Gazette Journal reported.

There were also several abductions on campus in November and December, but police have not made any arrests.

Students Argituxu Camus, 27, and roommate Mariann Vaczi, 30, said they foiled an attempted break-in of their apartment by opening blinds and startling a man trying to open the sliding door. They told the newspaper they didn't report the incident to police.

"I'm beginning to wonder when this is going to end," Camus said. "If someone really wanted to come into our house, they could. I don't feel safe here at all."

University police Chief Adam Garcia said his department is sending e-mail alerts on the cases to students and staff, as well as safety tips and phone numbers to call for help or to call in tips.
