MOSCOW, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Russian U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin says if Kosovo declares independence from Serbia, it will be kept out of the United Nations.
Churkin said Wednesday if Kosovo goes down the road of unilateral declarations it will not become a member of any international political institution, Deutsche Welle reported Friday.
Leaders from Serbia and Kosovo had talks in 2006 and 2007, but reportedly did not come to a mutual compromise on Kosovo's intentions.
At Wednesday's United Nations Security Council gathering, the United States and Britain reportedly confirmed support for the independence of Kosovo.
Recently appointed Kosovar government officials said the province plans to declare its independence following the first phase of presidential elections in Serbia Jan. 20.
