Record set for rowing across the Atlantic

PORT ST. CHARLES, Barbados, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Irish and British rowers made it across the Atlantic Ocean in record time and they arrived at Port St. Charles in Barbados Thursday.

The La Mondiale team of 14 smashed the world's record by rowing pairs by more than 48 hours. They rowed for 24 hours a day for 33 days and 7.5 hours, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

"I am very wobbly. But it is a great feeling, it's fantastic. I'm off the boat, my daughter is in my arms, it's wonderful," one rower told the London newspaper.

The team broke another record when, for days in a row, they traveled more than 100 miles per day.

Team captain, Leven Brown, also holds the world's rowing record for fastest solo crossing.

"Leven took on a boat that was just an empty hull; a lot of people said it was impossible and kept running Leven down, but he's a very steady person and has just carried on and on until he achieved it," Brown's partner Yvette Jelfs said.
