Perot backs Romney, attacks McCain

DALLAS, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Texas billionaire H. Ross Perot is backing former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts for the Republican presidential nomination.

At the same time, the former independent presidential candidate attacked GOP hopeful Sen. John McCain of Arizona calling him "the classic opportunist" who is always reaching for "attention and glory," The Dallas Morning News reported Friday.

Perot, who ran as a third party candidate in the 1990s, told Newsweek he carries a grudge against McCain because McCain ignored evidence that living POWs were left behind in Vietnam. McCain, a former Navy officer, spent years as a prisoner of the North Vietnamese.

Perot says he took care of McCain's family after his first wife, Carol, was in a serious car accident.

"After he came home, he walked with a limp, she (Carol McCain) walked with a limp," Perot said. "So, he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona and the rest is history."
