JERUSALEM, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Three Israeli civilians were injured Thursday after 17 rockets were fired at a nearby Israeli town from Palestinian territory, officials said.

The barrage began around 8 a.m. in Sderot as children were headed for schools, Ynetnews.com reported. Two rockets landed in residential areas, another in an industrial area and the rest landed in open fields, the report said.

A Hamas group claimed responsibility for the barrage in Palestinian media.

Sderot Mayor Eli Moyal said he had been told by defense officials to expect an escalation in attacks.

Wednesday night, at least six people were hurt when several rockets landed in and around Sderot and south of Ashkelon, officials said.

Thursday morning, the Israeli military reported it conducted an airstrike on a car in northern Gaza, which killed three suspected militants, CNN reported.
