PALMACHIM AIR BASE, Israel, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- The Israeli military said it conducted a successful test of a missile interceptor system designed to counter surface-to-surface missiles.

The test Thursday at the Palmachim Air Base is part of the development of a multilevel defense system proposed by Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Ynetnews said.

The "Iron Dome" missile defense system is intended to intercept Qassam rockets, mortars and long-range missiles.
