Kucinich pays $25,000 for N.H. recount

CONCORD, N.H., Jan. 16 (UPI) -- New Hampshire elections officials Wednesday began recounting all Democratic ballots from last week's state primary.

The long-shot presidential campaign of Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, gave New Hampshire Secretary of State William Gardner a check Tuesday for $25,000 to begin the recount process, The Manchester (N.H.) Union-Leader reported.

Albert Howard, the Republican candidate who paid $2,000 when he requested a statewide recount, did not turn over money to pay for a Republican recount by Tuesday's 3 p.m. deadline, Gardner said.

"There is no Republican recount at this point," Gardner was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

A full recount of Democratic ballots will cost $67,600 because more people voted Democratic than Republican in the Jan. 8 primary.

The money Kucinich has paid will cover the cost of counting more than 100,000 ballots, Gardner said.

The Kucinich campaign has asked for the right to cancel the recount at some point if it sees there were no irregularities in the count.
