Croatia seizes heroin worth $3.5 million

ZAGREB, Croatia, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Croatian police said they arrested four Croatian nationals and seized 143 pounds of heroin when a truck transporting fruits tried to enter the country.

Croatian customs and police officers Monday stopped the Croatian truck after it crossed from Serbia into Croatia at the Bajakovo border check point, Marijan Benko, Croatian police chief told reporters in Zagreb Wednesday.

The heroin's value on the street market was estimated at $3.5 million, the Croatian Web site vijesti.net reported.

The drug, stashed in 120 packages and hidden under the seats of a driver and a co-driver, was being shipped on a regular Balkan route leading from Turkey, via Bulgaria and Serbia to Croatia on its way to Western Europe.
